“The time to learn how to live comes already too late. And it is in this lateness that the knowledge is forged, as a fault of living. And as it’s only question.” – Bernard Steigler

The Fault of Living is an ongoing series of works investigating technology as a mode of evolution through which human rationality shapes first ourselves, and then the organic world in it’s image. Heavily influenced by philosophy of technology, critical theory, and ecology, this project aims to confront the apparent convergence of organic and machinic systems under the shadow of the climate crisis. Through experimentations with code, physical computing, moving image, and speculative and critical writing, The Fault of Living is an attempt to chart the distance between living and non-living systems in order to understand what it means to be alive in the Anthropocene.
Volumes 1 & 2 take cellular automata – a computational paradigm that models the emergence of life – as a visual and conceptual starting point for speculative fiction and essay-style documentary that explores artificial life through the lens of computer science, biology, and continental philosophy.
